Warm-Up 3

Warm-Up 3 is all about turning informal, spoken language into formal, written language. The prompt is the kind of thing a health-and-safety officer might say when she's on a site visit, but the written version of her recommendations will use different grammatical structures and different words … because it's written and formal, not spoken and informal.

Remember that you've only got FIVE sentences to produce - you don't need to write the entire report.

According to the Health and Safety Executive in Sweden, work boots with reinforced soles and toecaps are needed to avoid injuries on the contractors´feet.

To wear a helmet is compulsory and to avoid the contractors from being aurally handicapped, the helmet should have built-in ear muffs.

Since the contractors are working at high levels, safety arrangements are needed to prevent accidents.

The certificates of the three diggers and the dumper truck are not valid anymore and the vehicles need to be tested immediately for further usage.

An authorized mechanic must inspect the hydraulic systems on the vehicles to assure that no leak has appeared.

  4. The working conditions during the establishment of the exihibiton centre in Kalmar are, according to the health and safety executive in Sweden, substandard. Several criteria need to be fulfilled if the work is to continue. The safety of the contractors is inadequate and have to be enhanced by the use of hardhats with built in ear protectors and boots with reinforced soles and toecaps. Furthermore everywhere the construction take place over ground level there has to be safety barriers. Thirdly several of the excavators and dumper trucks need to be examined by the test station and by an authorized mechanic to renew the test certificates and adjust the leaks in the hydraulic systems.

I am writing to let you know our Health and Safety Plan. We have some norms and rules that companies have to respect in their buildings. Maybe in China you have another rules or ways to control the buildings, for this reasons I am going to enumerate you different tips that you have to respect in order to continue the construction in a safety way.

Firstly, having proper work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps is essential. Workers need to be well protected and to have appropriate footwear in order to avoid injures on the feet.

In Sweden, wearing a safety helmet is compulsory. Everybody needs to use an appropriate helmet, it is not allowed be in the building work without it.

Due to the high noise level, every worker has to wearing ear protectors. The best and safety way is to get some helmets that have built-in ear muffs and a mesh to cover the face.

Rules about fences and safety barriers are very strict. It is mandatory to use fences and safety barriers of the proper height in every construction area before starting building above ground level.

In Sweden, there are rules about the building, which are compulsory according to the Health and Safety Executive. Hence, the workers need to wear proper work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps to avoid injuries on the constructors’ feet.

It is obligatory to wear an approved safety helmet, which has built-in ear muffs and mesh to cover the face.

Fences and safety barriers are necessary before starting building above ground level to avert accidents and injuries on the constructors.

The certificates of three diggers and a dumper truck are expired and not allowed to be used until they are tested at the test station.

An authorized mechanic must check the hydraulic systems of the vehicles and needs to make sure that there are no leaks anymore.

  10. The Health and Safety Inspector suggested us that the trainers our workers wearing should be replaced with proper clothes with work boots, reinforced soles and toecaps in order to guarantee safety.

Hardhats are compulsory workwear in Sweden because of the risk of falling.

Helmets contained ear muffs and a mesh are recommended to prevent our workers from the noise problem which can be happened.

Fences and barriers should be installed with proper height which can protect people from falling incidents everywhere.

Three diggers and a dump truck in our building site were confirmed with overdue certificates, so they need to be renewed through checking by an authorized service center.

  11. In Sweden we have certain kinds of rules that everybody has to follow. The rules will also apply in here, if you don’t obey the rules you will get winded up.

For safety reasons it is obligatory to wear prober working shoes that are hard on the top in case of something will fall on their feet. Normal shoes are regarded dangerous in these kinds of working areas.

Wearing a prober working helmet is mandatory.

We would advice the workers to wear an ear protector, even though the noise levels are quite normal. For a good example a helmet with ear protectors is advisable.

For the safety of the workers we advise you to use safety fences and barriers.

  12. Due to safety conditions, it is important to follow certain rules regarding clothing and the environment for employees.

Helmets, special working clothes and shoes are not optional; all employees must wear them when they are at this location, trainers do not protect from being injured if an accident happens.

All employees should wear ear protectors, we recommend buying special helmets with both ear protectors and a mesh for covering of the face.

When working above ground level, it is necessary to use fences and barriers of the proper high to avoid that the employees are falling down and injure themselves.

Some of the machines that you have in use do not have an approved test certification anymore and before the machines can be used again, you need to go and get them tested and approved.

  13. We had a visit from the Health and Safety Executive, it was concluded that there are a number of things that have to be sorted out before we can continue building the Exhibition Center.

For the first we should improve working clothes, those who work have to use shoes with steel toecaps and a helmet, is a must not an option.

The employees also need to use hearing protection because of the noise level and also a network that covers the face as a preventive measure.

Because of the risk of falling we need to improve fences on the alloy area wherever we are building above ground level, it reduces the risk of injury.

At least we have found three excavators and one dump truck in our area that are not authorized to use, then their test certificate runs out, it must be approved and can hopefully be done within the next few days by a certified mechanic.

It is with great significance that the co-workers are using suitable working boots with reinforced soles and toecaps to prevent injuries whilst the building is due.

Due to the stringent Swedish regulation system we have put together an extensive report to which you are required to follow.

It is strictly prohibited to enter the site without wearing an approved safety helmet - hardhats are not considered as approved.

During the inspection there were found several plants which did not have valid test certificates, these have driving ban with immediate effect. They can be brought back into service as soon as they´ve been approved by an authorised mechanic.

  28. According to the Swedish organization Health and Safety Executive, some of our systems are not any more for the standards. We hardly recommend abiding by the following rules:

First of all it is compulsory for workers to wear safety protections such as proper work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps because workers are carrying heavy materials.

Second of all hardhats such as safety helmets are compulsory on a construction site. It is essential to provide those kinds of helmets to workers to ensure their safety.

Third of all the construction site must be surrounded by fences and barriers to avoid any fatal fall but also to prevent any stranger person to enter in the site.

Finally it is compulsory in Sweden to test regularly machines used on the construction site by workers to make sure everything is working properly and can be used safely. This is why we need to get new test certificates for some of our materials.

  39. FROM Evelyn Rompelman
There have been some discoveries regarding the working conditions and the differences in rules and regulations of your Chinese company, here in Sweden.
We have found many issues with safety procedures, and are concerned for the wellbeing of your employees.
For companies in Sweden, there are rules about safety, such as: all workers must wear hard hats (better if they have built in ear-muffs and mesh facial coverings), proper work boots with steel toes, as well as safe working conditions- for example: safety barriers.
Another issue we have found is that three of your diggers and one of your dump trucks have certificates that have run out; by law you must discontinue use of these machines until you get up to date certificates for them.
These problems are very fixable, and can and must be sorted out immediately, however if they are not, unfortunately, we will have to close you down.

  40. The Health and Safety Inspector warned that if Health and Safety regulations are not complied inside the building site, he may enforce the closure of the site.

The Health and Safety Inspector required workers to wear boots suitable for working conditions, i.e., these must incorporate reinforced soles and toecaps.

Three excavators and a dumper truck have been considered inadequate for being put into service due to expired test certificates. Furthermore, leaks on the hydraulic systems of two of these plants are suspected.

From here on, workers are required to be prevented from entering the site if they are not wearing a safety helmet. Head protection safety measures are compulsory for workers inside the site.

The Health and Safety Inspector suggested ear muffs and a mesh to be incorporated on safety helmets as a way of workers to meet hearing and face protection requirements.

Firstly, here in Sweden the rules and obligations regarding to the Health and Safety inside the sites are highly required to continue this project.
Hence changes are needed, otherwise the site may be close down.

Secondly, in order to provide safety to the workers inside the site that are highly important that they wear a proper work boots within soles and toecaps to avoid injuries. Also all workers has a need to wear an approval safety helmet. Due to. hardhats is a compulsory workwear.

Regarding to the noise level which presents stable conditions by the rules. On the other hand, hardly I saw a person wearing a ear protection either a mesh to cover their face from the dust. In spite of the fact that, those are safety requirements too.

According to provide a safety working environment, safety barriers which the proper height are required in order to avoid falling injuries unexpected.

In conclusion, it appears that you have some machinery running without possess an approved test certification. Consequently, three diggers and a dumper truck has not beed permitted to use until their test certificate has run out.
